You are here:Getting Rid of that annoying Windows 10 update reminder for good!

Seriously Microsoft, some of us are happy with our machines the way they are. Plenty of windows 7 and 8 users world wide are being plagued by the windows 10 reminders that pop up every time they turn on their machines. It almost feels like it’s not even a choice anymore. The worst is there have been reports of windows 10 automatically installing without any authorization.

For those of you who don’t know (where have you been?) Windows 10 is Microsoft’s new operating system and comes as a free upgrade to Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 users. It is a very good operating system, but there are many who don’t want the upgrade due to a variety of reason; be it there is software that is not supported which is depended on or maybe not being ready to switch to a new OS.

What ever it may be, we here at Conscious IT have discovered a way to counteract this and put your mind at ease that the new OS will not automatically install.

GWX Control Panel

GWX Control Panel is a free tool which will remove and disable the ‘Get Windows 10’ notification from your machine. You can download it free from The Ultimate Outsider Website. It has an installer or portable executable, you choose which ever you prefer.

Once downloaded (install if you have the installer), run the program and you will see the following window.

GWX Cpanel

So what are we looking at here..? The Information at the top of the window lets you know the upgrade features that are currently enabled on your machine, you can read the status and summery section which will summaries it up nicely for you, so have a quick peep there.

The buttons at the bottom is where we will be the focus of our concentration:-

  • The Disable ‘Get Windows 10’ App button will stop all those annoying popup reminders and will disable the tray icon.
  • The Prevent Windows 10 Upgrades button will make sure that the OS will not install itself without your knowledge, it also stop all Windows Updates relate to Windows 10 (goody!)
The Delete Windows 10 Download Folders button deletes all traces of Wndows 10 on your machine (Windows 10 automatically downloads itself on your computer in case you don’t know.)
  • The Click to Clear Windows Update Cache button will clear out all download information that may be related to Windows 10.
  • The Enable Monitor Mode button will set GWX Control Panel to run in the background of your computer, with an icon on the system tray. It will let you know if anything related to Windows 10 is changed on your system.

Of course don’t feel pressured to click all the buttons. Just choose what suits you.
